Ningbo Port is mainly engaged in stevedoring, storage and transfer of imported iron ores, domestic and foreign trade containers, crude oil and product oil, liquid chemical products, coals and other bulk cargos. The cargo throughput of Ningbo Port was 362 million tons in 2008, increased by 18% year on year, second only to Shanghai Port and ranking the second among ports in China. Despite the world economy slowdown in 2008, the container throughput of Ningbo Port hit a milestone of 10,846,000 TEUs in 2008, an increase of 16% year on year. As a result, the port ranks among the world's Top 10 ports in terms of container throughput, ascending to 8th from 11th.
The rapid development of Ningbo Port benefited from its unique natural conditions. There are 213 shipping lines for container transport and 908 regular liner services per month. The top 20 shipping companies of the world have all set up their agencies in Ningbo. There are complete port inspection set-ups in Ningbo, which are speedy and efficient in work. From May of 1996, all the inspection and service set-ups of Ningbo entered the port area and worked together, undertaking coordinated services of customs declaration, inspection, finance, insurance, ship agency and cargo agency for customers. From the end of June of 1999, approved by the Customs Administration General, the business of through clearance between Hangzhou and Ningbo was formally started, facilitating cargo owners in Hangzhou district to go through locally the formalities of customs declaration of international container, exchange settlement and drawback. The through container transport between Hangzhou and Ningbo reduced transshipping links greatly. At the same time, storage yards for international container were built at the industrial park of Jinhua City and a commodity inspection organ was set up at the through supervising spot from Jinhua to Ningbo Customs House, providing an economic and convenient passage to the sea for the inland areas of Zhejiang Province.
Invested by Ningbo Port Group, the construction project of Ningbo Global Shipping Plaza (Phase 2 project of Ningbo International Shipping Service Center), the highest land-marking building in Ningbo, was officially commenced on Sept. 28, 2009, the project is of great significance in that it will further aggregate the city's shipping logistic resources, improve the port's service functions, optimize shipping logistic structure and upgrade core competitiveness of Ningbo as an international port city. As an important integrated part of Ningbo International Shipping Center, the land-marking building is an assembly of world famous port, shipping, logistic and trade enterprises.
